I have a key...

My newest venture here in Slovakia is a window in Bratislava that I have started renting - soon to be the Clutch Gallery. It is in an underground passage running from the Zochova bus stop into Stare Mesto (The Old Town), and measures 170 cm square. The other windows advertise local shop wares, etc; this one will be something completely different. I plan to show the work of Slovaks & Americans - the intent being a space that connects the two through art. I am preparing signage & walls this week, then installing the first show. Premiere artist? ME!

I ♥ Sauna

Moving from Arizona desert to East-Central European winter has made my body crave HEAT. Luckily for me, there are spas (geothermal and otherwise) all over Slovakia, including Zitny ostrov, and the Czech Republic. My local spot is in the basement of a hotel tucked into one of Bratislava's communist bloc concrete jungles. An unlikely oasis, at 6e per hour it's a bargain indulgence. Clothes are optional, regular visits to the water cooler are wise. Afterwards you will glow for days. Other side effects include a happy brain, one that has good ideas.

Obviously, don't forget these.

Lozorno: a small village in the Zahorie region, opposite Zitny ostrov, 20 minutes from Bratislava.

Bio Farm with pig, feeding of boar, wooden statues

Pond, emptied in fall which reveals felled trees covered with barnacles (clams?)

Weekend cottages around 2nd pond, Fishermen

Some homes quite palatial = corn drying palace

Walked around two ponds - through forest, forded a small stream, sank in the mud, found a wild stallion

Walked though the village to a cattle farm - hill of tires, strange lumps of string/rope

Used the bathroom in some kind of workers bunker - Very warm with a strange smell, communist

Visited the woodshop of a man who played us Russian folk songs on his casio keyboard

Then to the garden of Dea's parents - artists - struedel, compote, cabbage potato pancakes (a specialty of this region)

Fulbright Slovakia: Photographing Zitny ostrov

I've settled into my new apartment in Bratislava, purchased a reflective vest, 3 maps of the island, and been graciously lent a bike (old! pink!).
The plan: to cover the full area of Zitny ostrov (Great Rye Island) via bike + camera over the next 9 months. Beginning in Bratislava on the Danubian bicycle route, aka the Dunajska cylisticka cesta, I can ride all the way to Zitny ostrov. Once there, I will make stops along the way in the various villages, museums, and thermal hot spots throughout the island for site visits, sweats, and beds! The best part, when I run out of film/energy/socks I can head home to BA, a mere 15-100km bus ride away. Can't wait to get started.

Guilmi Art Project

Last week I took part in a special event in Guilmi, a small mountaintop village in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Here, Lucia Giardino and Federico Bacci have created a unique artist-in-residence program that successfully merges artist and village. This year's resident was Nicola Toffolini, an artist who often works site-specifically within the landscape, as he did here. He based his three installations in Guilmi on Joseph Beuys' Abruzzo project from 30 years ago.

In the summer of 1992, mom and dad decided the time was ripe for a Southwestern road trip, complete with VW Vanagon. So, we went to the Biosphere to check out the planet in a bottle. Little did we know of all the drama unfolding behind those glass walls...

Years later, after moving to Tucson for grad school, I took an interior tour of the now-defunct eden. Our surly tour guide carried an old hand held projection system with attached microphone used to tell us about the rainforest, the beach, the savannah, the failure of the biosphere due to an oversite in design (wind!). Realizing later that he was in fact one of the original bionauts, I wished I had been able to delve more into the biosphere's backstory. I heard it was a lover scorned scenario (a sealed door flung open in spite, the resulting crumble of the hermetic earth dome). Anyway, he left before we could question him.

I have been at the F_AIR artist-in-residence program for 6 weeks. In between teaching and logging hours at the studio in preparation for my upcoming show, I have had a chance to explore the city. So good! And totally unplanned, just how I like it.

Here's what memo study has to say for themselves (with some help from google translate):

A large urban garden designed by memo study, from April 30 to May 30 will be hosted in Florence, Largo Annigoni. "Spelling" is the name of the project designed by the architects Ciullini Alessandra Daniele Del Kitchen, Letizia Gensini and Niccolò Natali.

Spelling and reading the "signs" made by man in the rural landscape and urban pedestrian space is an ideal matrix for a new way of conceiving the "gaps" of contemporary cities and free of all conceptual and physical spaces maintained by the city to the countryside. This includes vases, containers, flower beds, gardens, small plots to large agricultural lands. Spelling is an urban place, a combination of minor crops, exhibitions, and gathering points where restoration of the link between nature, countryside and city can occur. It is not a traditional vegetable garden, but a widespread landscape, consistent with the evolving contemporary society.

The garden of flavors and odors ( rosemary, basil, lavender, thyme, oregano, parsley, mint, chives, lettuce, zucchini, strawberries and tomatoes) reflects a growing desire to regain possession of fabric of the city, the desire to return to nature, the desire to grow what is consumed. The vegetable garden (begonias, hydrangeas and daisies), where the flower blooms and other relations with a more sustainable way of thinking and living in the city; the orchard fruits (apricot, almond, olive and cherry trees), where we developed a new vision of public space, conceived as a human interface between town and country.

This week I worked at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show. I was in the wholesale area, which felt something like a bedouin tent. I met people from all over the world who travel constantly selling stones of every size, shape and color. It was an amazing experience, plus, I learned about the universe of gems beyond diamonds. It is vast. And very sparkly.

My fellow MFA cohort Camden Hardy embarked on a photo journey this fall to document the length of Tucson's Pantano wash, one mile at a time. I joined him on two trips. On this one we scaled some barbed wire, navigated a deep ravine to drop into the wash, Camden made pinholes and desert photograms, I found and claimed an island. At the end we realized we had been trespassing the whole time. Oops.

The culmination of our work will be a catalog of projects, performances and design-based research to be published in the spring. Tomorrow's event, Bat Night 2010, takes place in the Rillito River wash. There will be speakers, music, and bats. Lots of bats.

A perfect last day in Tucson. Luce coffee, the street fair, a Tumamoc hike, dinner at Maynard's and drinks at Congress with my photo ladies (+ an unanticipated Tom Walbank performance). All this and I managed to pack, move, and work in the studio a little, too.

Yes, perfection.

Road trip 2009: The last time I stopped at the Prada Marfa installation it had been looted - this time I found it restocked. After watching the sunset here and then checking into the Thunderbird Motel, mom and I had dinner at Maiya's (homemade bread, caprese, wine, salmon & chocolate). Later, we returned to a spot on the highway just far enough out of town to access total darkness and the incredible west Texas nighttime sky. Good food, new cities, and genius mixes will continue...

The next 2 months of my life:

We left Richmond Saturday morning for the Ferry in Reedville, VA. A couple hours later we disembarked on Tangier. Golf carts - lots of them. There are no cars on Tangier, also, no alcohol - it's a dry island. The population of Tangier hovers around 450 full time residents, about 50 of them the watermen that split their time between the bay, home, and their crab shacks (a watery version of the gentleman's den). We paddled around the harbor's obstacle course of crab pots on Sunday morning - the only day the men take off. Some highlights of the 48 hours spent there included the above ground front yard cemeteries, local dialect (cornish english), and crab cakes. There are 3 restaurants, 3 gift shops, a church, a post office, an ice cream shop, and a grocery store on Tangier. We visited all of them. One shop sold me a rusted license plate from a whaler and gave a page torn from the bible for free. The island has deeply religious undertones, which become apparent after spending more than 12 hours there. The Tangier Museum was a collection of objects, images and recorded stories largely labeled with post-it notes. I heard someone point herself out in the photographs to her son at the "Women of Tangier" exhibit. Tim and I walked the entirety of Tangier 3 times - the first led us to their beach, which we had all to ourselves for the afternoon. The second led us to the boat graveyard and town dump. Much of the land is marsh, the rest is close to it (most say the island is sinking). A strange and wonderful place to visit.

After a great weekend spent in Manhattan/Brooklyn I came back to Richmond and checked out VCU's Anderson Gallery. The show up now, Travelogue, includes photographs by Martin Parr and Michelle Van Parys, and a video by Olaf Breuning.

I loved Parr's autoportraits - he used himself as the subject of random posed tourist photos around the world. He has inspired me to do something silly...

Parys' black and white images of the American Southwest made me homesick for Tucson. It happens that I was carrying around a copy of Rebecca Solnit's Field Guide to Getting Lost today and it was all very mythic West, the mythic journey, and the looking.

Breunings video, Home 2, was shown at the 2008 Whitney Biennial. This pseudo-documentation of a group boat trip down a river in Papua New Guinea and the stops to "authentic" villages along the way made me feel second hand embarrassed for all tourists. But I want to believe that my impromptu hair braiding/dancing/drinking session in the Dominican Republic chotchka depot was authentic!! It was broken up by a bus of americans coming through the door. Was it real? Is it ever?

National Tap Dance Day - May 25

On my ride to the Museum of the Confederacy I pedal through Jackson Ward and past my new favorite public sculpture. Bill "Bojangles" Robinson was born in Richmond on May 25, 1878. His major contribution to dance was a physical shift away from the floor; Robinson invented a new way to tap, transforming it from a flat-footed dance to a style that pushed the performer to his toes. Some of his famous stunts that gained attention (besides an illustrious dancing and acting career) were his "stair dance", ability to run backward, consumption of large amounts of ice cream, and dancing of the length of broadway on his 61st birthday.

I am camped out in Richmond, Virginia. Geographically it ranges from being considered the mid-atlantic, to the Southeast, to The South, to more southern than the South. One thing people don't argue about is the fact that it was/is the capital of the Confederacy.

My next two months will include books (VCU sculpture southern lit reading group), eating& drinking in the soul kitchen downstairs as much as possible, and making photographs of small local landforms. Also, an internship in the photo archive of the Museum of the Confederacy. Ambrotypes, tintypes, and daguerreotypes, oh my!
