Clutch Gallery Opening: Innerscapes

Innerscapes
(2012, C-prints, 40x60cm)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Life is a journey. I am the wanderer. Roving through the landscape, which is stretching inside me, taking its challenges and ambushes, I'm trying to find the right direction. I'm visualizing spots, places, which are important to me, but also the ones which I'm keeping from. Analyzing what's inside me, I'm mapping my own world, recording notes about every detail. I'm talking about what I see, when my eyes are closed.

Wandering Wanderers Stew

This week I read an article about the death of "Cyber Flaneury" (see here) and shortly thereafter re-watched my favorite childhood movie, The Neverending Story. In Richard Todd's book about the "search for authenticity",  he talks about various ways that we create and process reality in the quest for true experience. Objects, architecture, politics, tourism, our social selves, and even Walt Disney's "fascistic smarm" are not safe from Todd's evaluation of things TRUE and REAL. Maybe a walk in the woods is best...  But back to the Neverending Story. Here is the scene where Fantasian warrior Atreyu learns about the nature of his universe, which is being destroyed by The Nothing:

          Atreyu:
I will not die easily. I am a warrior.

            G’mork:
(G'mork laughs.) Brave warrior, then fight the nothing.

            Atreyu:
But I can't ! I can't get beyond the boundaries of Fantasia.

G'mork laughs and Atreyu grows angry.

            Atreyu:
What's so funny about that ?

            G’mork:
Fantasia has no boundaries.

A storm grows closer to the city, slowly shaking it to pieces…
 Rocks fall here and there.

            Atreyu:
That's not true. You're lying.

            G’mork:
Foolish boy. Don't you know anything about Fantasia?
It's the world of human fantasy. Every part ,every
creature of it, is a piece of the dreams and hopes of mankind.
Therefore, it has no boundaries.

There's a crash and more rocks fall.

 Atreyu:
But why is Fantasia dying then ?

            G’mork:
Because people have begun to loose their hopes
and forget their dreams. So the nothing grows stronger.

            Atreyu:
What is the nothing ?!

            G’mork:
It's the emptiness that's left. It's like a despair,
destroying this world. And I have been trying to help it.

Atreyu:
But why ?

            G’mork:
Because people who have no hopes are easy to control.
And whoever has control has the power.

            Atreyu:
Who are you really ?

            G’mork:
I am the servant of the power behind the nothing.
I was sent to kill the only one who could have
stopped the nothing. I lost him in the Swamps of
Sadness. His name was Atreyu.

Clutch Gallery Opening: Bouquet Bou

Clutch Gallery officially opened last night with my show, Bouquet Bou. It was chilly, but we had rum & Kofola to warm our cockles. It was a great evening! Please see my giant thank you letter and the updated post & pix on the creation of Clutch here... and website here.

Bouquet Bou
(2012, C-prints, 50x50cm)
Please join me for the first ever opening at Clutch Gallery. Clutch is a underground passage-turned-art space founded by Christiana Caro in Bratislava, Slovakia. The gallery will showcase works by Slovak and American artists.

First on view: Bouquet Bou. Photographs by yours truly; a selection from the current body of work I've made during my time living in Bratislava. Art and Kofola will be served and a post opening gallivant about town is likely. Come out!

Opening: Saturday, January 28, 7pm
Exhibition: January 26-February 18
Hours: 24/7

CLUTCH - The assembly that engages and disengages a transmission. Performing successfully while under pressure. A group of baby birds. A ladies handbag. A grasp or hold. An awesome rock band. Exactly what you need, exactly when you need it. the crucial moment that comes between winning and losing. Great, essential, and potent rolled into a single word.
Clutch is also used to describe something that is done, not something that is.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Presne čo potrebujete, presne ked to potrebujete. Rozhodujúci okamih ktorý prichádza medzi výhrou a prehrou.

Veľkolepé, dôležité a potencionálne spojené do jedného slova.

Into the new II: Holidays

My mother came to visit me in Bratislava & we took a side trip to Budapest.
Wizzard's 1970's hit, I wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday - aka the song AirBerlin was playing when I embarked on my flight from Vienna to Paris on Christmas Eve. An unusual welcome.
My father met us there. Once in France more adventures followed...
Good shows I checked out:
My first Hammam experience. It looked a lot like this, actually.
To Champagne for the New year with my sister Miss Vicky,  Melanie Tarlant & Co...
... and then to Bordeaux. The Duck was there, too.  A beautiful holiday!
